Will hard disks become extinct??
Why do we need hard disks??? To store data obviously. Bad question.
Now what if we can store all our data over internet with backup service. In short, what if we can store data indefinitely over data servers with features like unlimited storage and sharing for FREE..
Will we need hard disks any more?? Yes maybe, for downloading stuffs from internet so that we can upload them to the data servers.
Oops! I forgot to mention, some online storage and backup services have the function of transferring files remotely. In layman terms, data stored in server on one storage service provider, can be transferred to the server of another storage service provider, just by entering the web address of the file.
Recently when I took blogging somewhat seriously... I faced problems with uploading some music for putting it on the blog. The next problem I faced was when I needed to share some files with friends (you too..) . So summing up, my problems were
1. Upload music to some storage site which also allows streaming them online.
2. Get hold of a reasonable file storage website, which can store the data for maximum period of time.
So my search began...It was a long one. Cutting it short, I came across some reasonably good sites. Though my search yielded some hundreds of sites, half of them were paid ones or very few features were present for free users.
My search came to stop at some of these websites which I am currently using and facing so to say no problems... Don't know if future holds any surprise for me that might change my view on these, but as for now I have ended my search.
1.Binfire
Binfire.com is a relatively new website.Binfire.com is a social / business networking web site, that connects people together to share and exchange files, ideas and goods. Binfire provides an unlimited free online storage for every registered user. Binfire.com will make it easier than ever before, to share and be connected to friends and loved ones.
- Anyone can join Binfire.com.

This new upcoming storage website has lots to offer for its user in the near future starting from multiple uploads , more user friendly dashboard for managing collaboration tasks to live chat. All these for free. Now who needs a hard drive???
2. Adrive
Online,Centralized File Storage
Avoid the Hassle. Avoid the Hardware.
- No need to worry about running out of space on your local hard drive
- Avoid the hassle of using external storage devices
- All file types are supported by ADrive's online storage
Access Whenever, Wherever.
- Centralize the location of your data
- Gain access to your data at anytime, from anywhere you are connected to the Internet
Online Backup
Stop Worrying, Protect Your Files.
- No need to worry anymore about losing your data due to computer failures or outsider threats
- Backup your valuable files to ADrive
Do I need to describe anymore ?? Now here's the catch. Free users get only 50 GB of online backup space. But if you want to pay then there are Signature and Premium plans too. But none are unlimited like binfire.
Like Binfire.com files can be shared in adrive.com too, but for free users the share link remains valid for only 14 days. So for personal sharing it's not that bad.
Well till now all I was speaking was for free Users. In case you need the real beast, get a Signature or Premium account and you get loads of services which are not provided for free users.. like FTP transfer, SSl encryption...the list goes on for quite a few lines.
3. Mediafire
Mediafire.com seems to be a great competitor for Rapidshare. Mediafire has a great set of features for free users.
Unlimited storage
Now these are called features. Unlimited uploads & downloads..Parallel downloads. What else would a free user want?? Files uploaded by a free (registered) user will be kept as long as the user logs into the account.
"For MediaPro subscribers, your uploaded files will be stored forever as long as your MediaPro account is active.
For free accounts, there is currently no time limit on how long uploaded files will be stored as long as you access your account (i.e. login to your account) at least once every 60 days OR at least one of your files is accessed (i.e. downloaded) every 30 days."
The most important and lucrative feature according to me is the resume feature.."Yes, unlike most file hosting sites, MediaFire supports resuming of disconnected downloads as long as your web browser or download manager/accelerator supports resuming. You can resume a download for up to 24 hours from when you first clicked the download link."

4. Filefactory
Files can be uploaded directly from computer hard drive, Remote file transfer, and TORRENTS.
The third way to upload files actually caught my attention. Some ISP's block ports, or maybe administratior blocks them. Bottomline p2p won't work. Here comes the rescuer. Just paste the link of the torrent file from some torrent search engine like thepiratebay.org or mininova.org and give it some time. Being a free feature, filefctory will take some time for downloading the torrents. So maybe in next 6 hours, the file will be downloaded into the filefactory account ready for download through HTTP. Now not many administrators block HTTP downloads. Try it!!
Another feature is the music player widget. Upload any music and make a playlist of it. Add the playlist to the widget and bang! There I go streaming online music. But it's not that free.. check this out
"
How long is a file stored at FileFactory?
We host files indefinitely. However if your file has not been downloaded after 90 days, it will automatically be removed.
Files for Premium Members are never deleted as long as their Premium Account remains active. If you have a Premium account and your account expires, the files in your account will be subject to the 90 day rule. "
Maximum file size 300 MB
Free registered user storage space 100GB

5. Esnips
I had much good thoughts for esnips. But lately while using it that changed. Esnips offers 5GB space for registered users. Music can be streamed directly (though some bugs are present) Yet those are minor ones. Coming to the point, what changed my mind was every time I tried to upload some music file, error came up saying that the file may be infringing copyright. Tried twice to upload, left the moment it popped up the third time.
6. localhostr
ok! this is my latest addition. A straight forward site.
check it!
"File Longevity
- Files reside on the localhostr servers for 30 days or until we need to recover disk space, which ever comes first.
- Priority for deletion is given to files that have never been downloaded.
- Files attached to user accounts hold the highest priority and are currently not deleted under any circumstance."
So in case, you are in a hurry to share some file this website is the fittest one you can find.
Max Size 50 MB
Any file type.
Direct link
So next time somebody asks you about your hard disk storage space, give them a number like 2 TB(terabyte) or maybe some 100 TB.
